About Indian Summer
We started as a small family food stall during lockdown, as a way to get the rich flavours of Jayanth’s aunties delicious recipes out into the world. Growing up in Chennai, she learnt from the surroundings and her fondest memories were being treated to Kati Rolls on her visits to Kolkata. After Jayanth saw the hustle and bustle of the street vendors in India for himself he felt inspired to bring this dish back to the streets of the UK. By teaming up with a talented business partner and innovative chef, Becan, the two of them made this dream a reality. Our main wares are the famous Kati rolls of Kolkata, India. They feature your choice of curries from a selection of vegetarian or vegan options, topped with fresh salad and homemade sauces. All wrapped in a piping hot paratha straight from the Tawa pan. Our sides' include our mouth-watering homemade onion bhajis, or a crispy vegetable samosa topped with chana masala. We also celebrate our mixed backgrounds and the culinary melting pot of Bristol by including masala mac and cheese, Bhaji and seitan burger, and a range of enchanting Indian inspired cakes. The two of us love food and the opportunity of experimenting with and adapting dishes is a huge part of why we do the stall. We provide a healthy, original twist to traditional dishes while still honouring the punchy spices and rich flavours of Indian cuisine. By using locally sourced produce, reduced salt sugar and oil then packing all our plates with vibrant veggies and home-made chutneys. Our goal is to be as sustainable as we can – using locally sourced ingredients where possible and packaging that doesn't hurt the planet. At events based in Bristol we transport all our goods and equipment via e-cargo bicycle - one less car on the road in an already over polluted city. This comes with an amount of personal cost (e.g time and physical exertion) but we find it wholly necessary to further our ethics and morals, as well as forcing ourselves to be ruthlessly organised! We mainly work at street food markets and festivals however also do cater for private events including but not limited to weddings, birthdays, and corporate events. We started originally at the M32 Flea market with a table and some samosas and toppings and this is now our full time job all year round. With minimal funding and investing almost all of what we earned back into the company, we are incredibly proud to be in the position that we are in having done large scale events such as the International Balloon fiesta as well as festivals like Big Love and Shall Not Fade. Primarily, however, our pride lies within the fact we work independently and are self sufficient expressing ourselves and doing what we love!
