Events, no matter their size, can generate a significant amount of waste and carbon emissions. The impact is evident in single-use plastics, food waste, and high energy consumption. However, with intentional planning and the right suppliers, you can host an event that’s both memorable and environmentally friendly.

1) Select your venue carefully

The venue you choose can significantly influence your event's green credentials. Look for venues with strong sustainability practices, such as:

  • Energy-efficient lighting and heating: This will drastically reduce energy consumption, lowering the event’s carbon footprint. You can also plan your event during the day and in the warmer months, reducing the need for energy-intensive sources.

  • Waste management systems: Having a robust recycling and composting programme will ensure waste is handled responsibly. Ask the Events Manager about each venue's policies.

  • Sustainable materials: Look for venues built or furnished with recycled or sustainable materials to minimise environmental impact.

2) Hire conscious event catering

Food is at the heart of any event, and many independent caterers are ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability best practice. Look for suppliers who:

  • Source locally and seasonally: Opting for local and seasonal ingredients reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Plus, seasonal produce often tastes better and supports local farmers.

  • Minimise food waste: Select caterers with strategies to reduce food waste, such as donating leftovers to local charities or composting.

  • Use Eco-Friendly Packaging: Biodegradable or reusable packaging helps cut down on plastic waste, ensuring a cleaner environment. Almost all of our suppliers have made the move already, but it's worth checking.

At Togather we take pride in connecting you with suppliers who not only excel in their field but also share your commitment to sustainability. We've compiled a list of our greener event caterers here, all perfect for a summer party and any other celebrations.

3) Favour plant-based options

Including a variety of plant-based menu options can significantly reduce your event's environmental impact for three main reasons:

  • Lower carbon footprint: Plant-based foods usually need fewer resources and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than animal-based alternatives.

  • Water conservation: Plant-based foods generally require less water for cultivation.

  • Less land degradation: Plant-based agriculture often uses less land, helping to prevent deforestation and habitat destruction.

4) Promote sustainable transportation

Encouraging eco-friendly transportation options for your guests can help reduce the overall carbon footprint of your event:

  • Public Transport: Select a venue that is easily accessible by public transport and provide guests with information on how to get there.

  • Carpooling and Shuttle Services: Offer carpooling options or shuttle services to reduce the number of vehicles required.

  • Cycling and Walking: If feasible, encourage guests to cycle or walk to the event.

Finally, hold yourself accountable

Consider measuring the carbon footprint of your event and offsetting it through reputable carbon offset programmes. This can involve investing in projects that reduce or capture carbon emissions, such as reforestation or renewable energy projects.

Whether you're an experienced organiser or new to event planning, incorporating sustainability is not only possible but crucial. It's about making informed, conscientious decisions that impact both your brand’s reputation and its long-term legacy.
