You've got the ring, set the date, and now you're hunting for that perfect spot to say "I do". But before you start picturing your dream wedding at the top of a mountain or on your favourite beach, let's chat about what’s actually possible in the UK.
First off, the idea of getting married anywhere your heart desires may be appealing but there are rules and restrictions in place. Why? Well, it’s all about ensuring your union is legal and recognised. Don't worry, though! We’re here to navigate these waters together.
Understanding the legal landscape
In England and Wales, the law requires that weddings take place in a location that is either a religious building or a venue approved by the local authority. These approved venues have a few boxes to tick – they need to be 'dignified', 'seemly', and 'open to the public'. This rules out moving vehicles and private residences without special licenses. But the good news? This list of approved venues is vast and varied and you can see the latest list of approved venues here.
Scotland is a bit different – it’s not about where, but who. Here, the focus is on the person conducting the ceremony. This means your venue options widen to parks, beaches, and even your own backyard, as long as the officiant is authorised.
Pushing the boundaries
Now, just because there are rules, doesn’t mean your dream wedding can’t happen. Think of these as guidelines to steer your creativity. With the surge in unique venues gaining approval (think zoos, museums, and historical sites), the line between traditional and unconventional is blurring.
Making it happen
So, you’ve got an offbeat location in mind? Here’s what you need to know:
Approval Matters: Private properties and unconventional locations can become approved venues, but there’s a (sometimes lengthy) process involving local authorities - contact your local council to find out more.
Plan B: For the most adventurous locations (hello, cliffside ceremonies!), consider a legal ceremony at an approved location, followed by a symbolic one at your dream spot. That way, you get the best of both worlds.
Creative Solutions: Tents, temporary structures, or even a boat (as long as it’s permanently moored) can be transformed into approved venues. The only caveat? They must adhere to health, safety, and accessibility regulations.
